AmiaCervantes grew up in Vermont where she attended BachTriataa dance and theater intensive under the direction of Tara Dawn Bach. She also studied modern, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, tap, and ballet at the Contemporary Dance and Fitness Studion under the direction of Lorraine Neal. Through audition, she became a member of Teen Jazz--the studio’s touring company. During this time, she attended the Monsters of Hip Hop conventions in New Jersey and Florida, and won the Picking the Stars Hip Hop competition in Montreal Canada.Amiamoved to New York and in 2009 earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance at Long Island University/Brooklyn Campus with a focus in modern and ballet. AtLIU,Amiahad the pleasure of performing works choreographed by Mark Morris, Laura Dean, KateWeare, AlexandraBeller, Earl Mosley, Astrid VonUssar, and Camille A. Brown among others. In addition, she regularly studied under Nathan Trice,Rosalynde LeBlanc, SarahNeece,AlenkaCizmesija, and Dana Hash Campbell. After graduation,Amia was a member of the modern dance company MurraySpaldingMovement Arts based in Manhattan. She also danced with hip hop choreographer Joey Tadeo to promote his work and taught hip hop workshops at Vassar College as well as various dance classes/workshops throughout New York. Since returning to Vermont in 2011, Amia has choreographed the musicals for Green Mountain Valley School in Waitsfield, Montpelier High School, and Harwood Union High School in Duxbury, and the competitive routines for all optional gymnasts at Central Vermont Gymnastics Academy in Waterbury. Amia teaches various styles of dance at the Contemporary Dance and Fitness Studio and is Director of Teen Jazz. Amia is also Artistic Director and company dancer for "U.S. and Them," a live multimedia dance documentary portraying the separation of family by undocumented immigration and the intolerably flawed U.S. Immigration System.
